The Hobbit – 2012-2014

Peter Jackson’s vision of Middle Earth has been extremely well-received since its beginning in 2001. Following the success of his previous entries, he returned to the world of Middle Earth to tell another story. The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins who is recruited to aid a band of dwarves on their mission to recover their lost kingdom. Along the way he encounters trolls, giant spiders, elves, and a dragon, all in the pursuit of a mountain of treasure. The film features several characters returning from the Lord of the Rings, most notably Ian McKellen as Gandalf. There are a lot of great things about this film, and it utilizes it’s source material well, adding in additional stories from the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien to stretch a short book into a 3-part epic.

It never quite lives up to its predecessor and suffers from a lack of character depth, but overall it is quite enjoyable.

A massive undertaking to watch, this one requires time, but for its ambition I give it…
