Hungary has been on a roll in recent years, turning out some truly great films. One of their most recent efforts is On Body and Soul, the story of a pair of slaughterhouse employees who find themselves sharing the same dream. But finding each other within the dreams is much easier than finding each other in the real world. Watching these two characters push and pull each other as social expectation or mood swings changed their relationship day to day, was truly a joy. The detail put into this film was impressive and every moment shared by these two seemed perfectly natural and real. There is a strong sense of romanticism here that both audience and characters realize will fail to live up to expectations.
A truly inspired film that lingers long after it is over, it isn’t for everyone, but any cinema fan should embrace it.
An original work in a world of reboots and sequels, this film strives to be something great and it succeeds…
