Marvel is 18 movies in. Their latest project is Black Panther, which is notable for its almost entirely black cast. The prominence of a black superhero in today’s society is a fantastic message to send and it is the perfect time for this character. The film follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who returns to his home country of Wakanda to become king. This film follows T’Challa as he tries to balance his role as king with his desire to continue acting as a vigilante superhero. The most impressive aspect of this film isn’t the script, which is fantastic, or the directing, which goes above and beyond expectations. The best part of this film is the performances. Boseman proves he has the chops to keep up with some of the greatest Avengers, while Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira bring wit and innovation to their roles that put them on even ground with the multi-talented Forest Whitaker and Andy Serkis.
Thanks to great performances and amazing characters, this film succeeds and proves that Marvel isn’t going anywhere.
Great social commentary and a fun superhero flick, I give this film…
