Stanley Kubrick is a genius, there is no doubt about it. He created great films for over fifty years and each one was unique and completely unexpected. One of his greatest films is easily The Shining. There are so many things to love about this film, but I’ll start with the direction. There are a great many films who shift quickly and with purpose, and then there are some that move slowly, intent on finding purpose. This one is the latter; there are a number of moments in this film that find characters entering the film after long deliberate shots. The acting here is also truly impressive, both Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall do a fantastic job as the antagonist and protagonist respectively and even Danny Lloyd proves his acting chops as the equally creepy Danny/Tony.
Terrifying and genre-defining, this film is the quintessential horror film.
There is no way to rate it as any less than perfect, since it is a masterpiece of cinema…
