Avengers: Infinity War – 2018

Okay, this one is going to be a tough one to judge. This film is basically the first half of a really long movie and saying definitively what I think about it is impossible, since next year it could all change. Infinity War follows the fractured Avengers as they reassemble to address the threat of Thanos and his quest to destroy half of all life in the universe. The film juggles many different storylines, chiefly led by Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, each of which deals with Thanos’ attempts to obtain the Infinity Stones he needs to unleash massive death and destruction. This film features more talent than any other film in the Marvel Universe and deftly juggles the storylines to give each character plenty an appropriate amount of screen time.

There are quite a few MVPs in this film, but I want to highlight the talents of Robert Downey Jr. who has been playing Tony Stark for over a decade and still brings his A-game to the role. He never seems tired or like he’s phoning it in. I also think his interactions with Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pratt were some of the best moments of the film and both actors have the right level of wit to go toe-to-toe with Downey. My next MVP is Elizabeth Olsen, who is the heart-and-soul of the film and gives an amazingly stripped down performance, especially in scenes with Paul Bettany. Olsen is a very talented actress and her role has never been quite as raw as this, which helped increase the stakes of the film. Lastly, I believe Josh Brolin deserves a shout-out for his mastery of motion capture in his role as Thanos. It is very difficult to act in a motion capture suit, but Brolin does a truly magnificent job and truly captures the certainty of Thanos’ mission.

The culmination of 10 years and 18 films, there is a lot to love about this film and most of it is thanks to fantastic performances and the direction of the Russos.

I will judge this movie as fairly as I can, but my opinion could change once the next part comes out, but I think for now this film deserves…

4 out of 5
