12 Years a Slave – 2013

There are some stories that have to be told, no matter how tragic they are, this is one of them. 12 Years a Slave follows Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) a free man living in New York who is deceived and sold into slavery. The film follows him as he tries to adapt to his new reality while finding it hard to let go of his truth. Steve McQueen takes the reigns on this massive undertaking and never misses a beat. Easily one of the most painful movies of the 2010s, but it’s painful because it is so well made. This is, undoubtedly, the most painful period in American History and there have been countless films made about this period, but they haven’t always been good.

Probably the best film about slavery, and one that will withstand the test of time.

Thanks to great performances and a great director, this film earns…

4.5 out of 5
