True Grit – 2010

Remakes are either hit or miss, and, more often than not, miss. The John Wayne version of True Grit is a classic in its own right, but the Coen Brothers version is something special. The film follows Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) a precocious 14-year-old who hires a seasoned Marshal called Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to help her track down her father’s killer (Josh Brolin). The film focuses on this manhunt and features a lot of great scenery and fun dialogue that even non-western fans will appreciate. The Coen Brothers have proven time and again that they are in the film business to make their kind of films and this one is no exception. It may not be a crowd pleaser or a box office smash, but it brings a lot to the western genre and honors the John Wayne classic in its own way.

Not the best Coen Brothers film, but definitely a great film nonetheless.

For breathing new life into the western genre, I award this one…
