Gone too soon is a phrase that is used a lot to describe good actors who have passed away, I’ll use it here to describe Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman’s last starring role is as Gunther Bachmann, a German Intelligence Agent using a political refugee to catch a terrorism financier. The film works well to showcase the subtlety of Hoffman’s ability and brings his intensity to life for one of the last times. Based on the book by John Le Carre, this film is a quiet example of the spy genre and teases out thrilling elements through a slow build. There are a lot of great performances from international actors like Willem Dafoe, Nina Hoss, Homayoun Ershadi, and Rachel McAdams.
The film offers a chance to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman again and offers a great finale to a great career.
