Akira – 1988

Anime is a form of animation that originates from Japan. It isn’t my favorite animation style, but it is fairly realistic. Akira turns Tokyo into a nuclear wasteland, where motorcycle gangs battle each other nightly and the police shoot resistance members daily. The film also explores the concept of human evolution as scientist experiment on children to create the next step in evolution and discover if humans possess the capacity to become all-powerful gods. The resulting film is an awesome marvel that never shies away from the reality of the situation even during its most fantastical moments. People die, brutally, and the film makes a point to emphasize its disagreement with the method by which these people die, while also honoring its concept by telling the story it wants to tell.

While anime is not my favorite, this one was still pretty good.

I offer consideration the following rating of…

3.5 out of 5
