Onward – 2020

  • Originality: If someone were to ask what company has made the best animated films of the past 25 years, there’s only one answer: Pixar. Their latest venture focuses on a world where mythical creatures have slowly lost magic as technology took over their lives. There are a lot of meta references in this film, but the heart of the story is still an effective story of two brothers and their bond with their father. [4.5]
  • Performances: As with any animated film, the performances in this film come down to the effectiveness of voice acting, in this case the leads are Chris Pratt and Tom Holland. Holland does an admirable job, but his role doesn’t require much more than a voice, whereas Pratt is perfectly cast and his sense of humor perfectly translates into this medium and the world it occupies. • Technicality: Computer animation has come a long way over the past 25 years and this film is more than happy to show off with great spectacles and impressive vistas. The amount of time that goes into creating a film like this is part of what makes the genre so fascinating, because it would certainly be easier to craft traditional animation, but it would definitely not be as astounding. • Rewatchability: While it may not be at the top of the Pixar list, it is definitely one that parents will be putting on for their children due to its engaging colors and fun score. I can’t say yet if I’ll be including it in my regular rotation of Pixar movies, mostly because there is only so much emotional upheaval to which I’m able to subject myself. [4.0]

Total – [17.0/20.0]
