The Oscars are almost here and this is probably the most competitive one in recent memory. Almost every film nominated would easily be the best film of any other year, but so many good films came out in 2019, that the competition is stiff. Below are my predictions for who/what I think will win and who/what I think should win.
Best Picture
Will Win: 1917
This is a truly impressive feat in filmmaking and easily one of the best films of the year.
Should Win: Parasite
This might be the best film of the decade and it deserves its chance to prove it.
Best Director
Will Win: Sam Mendes
The technically impressive 1917 seems like it has the best shot, and that’s just fine.
Should Win: Bong Joon-ho
I can’t rave enough about Parasite and would love to see its director rewarded.
Best Actress
Will Win: Renee Zellweger
After the Golden Globes this one seems obvious, even if no one saw Judy.
Should Win: Scarlett Johansson
Marriage Story is a masterpiece of human emotion and it deserves recognition for that.
Best Actor
Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix
He might be the best actor working today, but does he deserve an Oscar for Joker?
Should Win: Adam Driver
Watching the tension rise in Driver’s performance is the best acting of the year.
Best Supporting Actress
Will Win: Laura Dern
She’s been on a massive upswing lately and this film just proves that it isn’t a fluke.
Should Win: Laura Dern
She will absolutely be the best choice for this award.
Best Supporting Actor
Will Win: Brad Pitt
Just being a cool guy works surprisingly well in a film filled with fun performances.
Should Win: Brad Pitt
A lot of stiff competition here, but somehow being cool feels like enough.
Best Original Screenplay
Will Win: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Tarantino’s screenplays are probably the best parts of his movies, especially this one.
Should Win: Parasite
Tight and close to perfect, this is one of the most ingenious ever written.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win: Jojo Rabbit
Witty and biting, Taika Waititi made one of the most creative films of the last year.
Should Win: Little Women
Greta Gerwig took this film into the 21st century and she deserves to be rewarded.
