Parasite – 2019

  • Originality: To describe this film as being extremely original would be an understatement. This is one of the most unique films I’ve ever seen and there was very little about it that I saw coming. I was genuinely shocked by the twist that came halfway through the movie and I can safely say that this film kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire time. [5.0]
  • Performances: The nature of the roles in this film required a lot of subtlety as each actor was basically playing two versions of the same person. Every actor in this film fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the film, but it is Song Kang-ho who stands above the rest as he maneuvers perfectly through the high and low-brow scenes and brings gravitas to every scene. [4.5]
  • Technicality: Bong Joon-Ho is one of the finest filmmakers working today and he has crafted several great films, but this one goes beyond his previous achievements. The way this film is framed perfectly showcases the class differences between the two main sets of the film. There were some truly impressive scenes here and the transitions between them were perfectly in line with his talent. [5.0]
  • Rewatchability: Foreign films are tricky because they require significant buy-in for English-speaking audiences, but it didn’t even matter with this film because I wanted to rewatch it as soon as it was over. Perfect films are hard to come by, but this one comes pretty close and I have no doubt that I’ll rewatch it many times and I’m sure it will hold up. [5.0]

Total – [19.5/20.0]
