Two origin stories, both of which feature Robert Downey Jr.
Iron Man is the gold standard to which all other Marvel movies are compared. This film is the origin story of Iron Man and features a game-changing performance by Downey, who was born to play the character of Tony Stark. What works so well about this film is that it sets up a bigger universe without sacrificing the story it wants to tell.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the combined effort of Sony and Marvel, both of whom recognized that working together offered them more options. Tom Holland plays a perfect Peter Parker, and he is neither angsty nor ambivalent, which is a new direction for the character. This film is the culmination of a decade of work and it succeeds.
Iron Man set up the biggest franchise in the world while Homecoming reaped the benefits of its wisdom and both created truly fun characters. My choice to advance to the next round is…
