A Wrinkle in Time – 2018

It was a massive undertaking by Disney to create the universe of this classic. Madeleine L’Engle’s novel is one of the most famous young adult stories of all-time. The film follows Meg Murry (Storm Reid), a teenage girl who goes on a mission across space and time to rescue her father from a dark entity. Meg is aided by her brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and classmate Calvin (Levi Miller) as well as a trio of women called Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit (Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, and Reese Witherspoon). The film is visually stunning and follows the book closely, but none of the actors in the film seem to have enough to do and some feel like they were given their roles for their name and not for their ability to play the role.

Credit to the young leads of this film, but everyone else felt out of place in this film, which doesn’t stray far enough from or stay true enough to the book to work.

Visually stunning and an impressive message about diversity, but its heavy-handedness seems to take precedence over telling a good story, so I give it…

2.5 out of 5
