The treatment of women by the Taliban is a tragedy and critics of the oppressive group have been calling for revolution since day one. The Breadwinner follows the story of a young girl called Parvana who begins dressing like a boy after her father is imprisoned. She is forced to work odd jobs and sell trinkets just to buy food, which only men are allowed to do under Taliban rule. This is a dark film filled with beautiful imagery and a powerful message. This is not a film for the faint of heart, but it is one whose message and purpose is more relevant than ever. It takes a powerful artist to convey such pain in such a beautiful way and this film succeeds masterfully.
Hopeful in a land of hopelessness, this film needs to be understood.
This story could be told through any medium, but for its use of animation so profoundly, I award it…
