To say that Marvel has been on a roll recently would be an understatement. 2017 was one of their best years for Marvel Studios, and it included this sequel to one of the most original films ever produced by the studio. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 follows the titular Guardians led by Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) who are trying to find their place in the universe. They are found by a man called Ego (Kurt Russell) who reveals himself to be Quill’s father. The film diverges and follows each of the Guardians as they struggle with identity crises, family dynamics, and new friendships, but they never feel too far apart from one another. It may not have the same freshness as the original, but it does the characters justice and plays out on a smaller, more intimate scale giving characters like Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) more backstory in an organic way.
Marvel is a powerhouse in the superhero genre and is on the verge of monopolizing the entire field.
Not important in the growth of the franchise, but a fun stand-alone feature that earns…
4 out of 5
