The spy thriller has been a staple of cinema ever since James Bond first graced the silver screen. But as compelling as Bond may be, it is the works of John le Carre who represent the most thrilling aspects of the spy film. Set in the aftermath of the Cold War, this film focuses on an investigation into high-ranking members of the intelligence community. Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, le Carre’s most famous character, who is tasked with discovering the identity of a mole at the very top of the Circus. The film has a choppy chronology that jumps back and forth between various time periods and different people, but it is through this format that the story best unfolds as each piece of the story tells an important part of the tale.
This film is one of the best adaptations of le Carre’s work and is intense and compelling.
