The Silence of the Lambs – 1991

Hannibal Lecter is one of the most famous villains of all time and his portrayal here by Anthony Hopkins is easily the greatest performance of the nineties. But as great as Hopkins is, this is not his film and the burden falls on Jodie Foster’s Clarice Starling to carry the film. Fortunately, Foster is more than capable of making this film shine. This film follows Starling as she hunts for a killer called Buffalo Bill and her boss sends her to seek advice from serial killer Lecter. Some of the best scenes are the interactions between Foster and Hopkins and they way they play off of one another is the definition of acting. Jonathan Demme directs this great cast and helps highlight how well these actors can play off of one another.

One of the best thrillers of all time and the last film to win the “Big Five” Oscars, with good reason.

Not quite perfect, but a fantastic film with great performances and a building intensity that never fully stops…

5 out of 5
