Three Kings – 1999

David O. Russell knows comedy. He understands how it works and what is necessary to sustain it, but he also understands when it shouldn’t be the central focus. His war comedy film Three Kings takes a bad situation and puts a comedic spin on it, as four soldiers discover a map to hidden gold in Iraq. The plot may seen a little out there, but thanks to Russell’s direction and great performances from George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube, the film delivers on its promise to be funny and timely, with Russell carefully straddling the gap between the two. And while this film may not shine like his later efforts (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter), it does paint a very colorful picture of what should be expected from him and how far he still wanted to go.

Good film, not a watch everyday movie, but definitely worth a look.

A fun little romp, but not as good as his later work…
